A new rookie record

On Monday, capping a September where he has been hot at the plate, Yankee outfielder Aaron Judge set a new major league record for home runs in a rookie season. In a game against Kansas City, which the Yankees won 11-3, Judge contributed two homers and 3 RBI, hitting his 49th and 50th homers of the season, breaking Mark McGwire's record of 49 homers set in 1987. Judge had hit two homers in Sunday's game against the Toronto and has had 14 homers in September, including four multiple-homer games.

Going into the All-Star break, Judge's quest to break McGwire's record seemed well on its way. Judge had broken Joe DiMaggio's Yankee rookie home run record and then he won All-Star Game Home Run Derby. Then Judge went into a 55-game slump after the All-Star break in which he only hit 11 homers. A look at how Judge's rookie season compares to McGwire, DiMaggio and Alex Rodriguez hitting home runs:

Note: DiMaggio only played 138 games as a rookie, the Yankees played only 153 as a team that year. McGwire only played 151 games in his rookie year and Arod only played 146 games as a rookie.
